SCHAUMBURG, ILLINOIS – Schaumburg Park District is deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Park Board Commissioner George Longmeyer, who served the District with unwavering dedication since his election in 2000. Longmeyer, a Schaumburg resident for over 30 years, played a pivotal role in shaping the District’s landscape, overseeing numerous major projects that have greatly benefitted the community.
During his 21-year tenure on the Park Board, Longmeyer contributed to the development of key facilities such as The Sport Center, K-9 Dog Park, Atcher Island Water Park, Olympic Park and the renovation of the Community Recreation Center. His leadership also supported the creation of unique community landmarks like the Kay Wojcik Conservation Area and Bison’s Bluff Nature Playground, in addition to the Schaumburg Golf Club renovation.
“George’s leadership and vision helped shape many of the outstanding facilities and programs that our community enjoys today,” said Tony LaFrenere, Executive Director of the Schaumburg Park District. “His dedication to serving the community was truly remarkable, and his impact on the District will be remembered for years to come. We are profoundly grateful for his contributions and will greatly miss his presence.”
In addition to his service at the local level, Longmeyer was a passionate advocate for parks and recreation across Illinois. He served on multiple Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) committees, including as chair of the IAPD Board of Trustees, furthering the mission of the IAPD and strengthening park districts statewide.
Longmeyer’s contributions to Schaumburg extended beyond the Park District. As a former assistant village manager and village manager, he was instrumental in key community projects, including the building of Schaumburg Regional Airport and the Boomers Stadium. His commitment to Schaumburg was also reflected in his roles on the Village of Schaumburg TIF District Joint Review Board and the Schaumburg Regional Airport Advisory Commission.
George Longmeyer’s legacy is one of commitment, vision and service to the Schaumburg community. His impact will be felt for generations to come.
